Qualified Dermatologist
Who Is Qualified to Treat Skin, Hair, and Nail Problems?
Only a certified dermatologist (MBBS + MD/DNB/DDVL/ DVD in Dermatology) is trained and legally qualified to:
- Diagnose skin, hair, and nail conditions
- Prescribe proper medical treatments
- Perform procedures
⚠️ Unqualified individuals (like beauticians, chemists, dentists, alternative practitioners or so-called “skin specialists” without medical degrees) are not allowed to do medical treatments or procedures. These can be unsafe and cause serious harm.
Always check for proper medical qualifications before starting any treatment.
Risks and Dangers of Unqualified Skin Treatments
- Severe skin burns, hyperpigmentation, and hypopigmentation (especially from lasers and chemical peels)
- Permanent scarring and disfigurement
- Worsening of acne, hair loss, or skin disease due to wrong diagnosis and inappropriate treatment
- Skin infections (bacterial, viral like herpes/zoster, or fungal)
- Allergic reactions or drug toxicity
- Keloids and hypertrophic scars
- Botched cosmetic results (asymmetric fillers, uneven skin tone, unnatural hairlines, etc.)
- Delay in diagnosing serious medical conditions like lupus, pemphigus, or skin cancer, leading to progression and complications
- Permanent blindness from poorly performed under-eye or facial filler injections
- Psychological distress, low self-esteem, and anxiety due to adverse cosmetic outcomes
Hair Transplant–Related Complications (when done by unqualified individuals):

- Folliculitis and poor graft survival
- Scalp necrosis (death of skin tissue)
- Shock loss of existing hair
- Incorrect anesthesia use leading to:

- Respiratory failure
- And in extreme cases, even DEATH

What You Can Do
- Always check for the doctor’s credentials — look for MD/DNB/DDVL in Dermatology
- Do not fall for misleading titles like “cosmetologist,” “skin expert,” or “aesthetic specialist” unless backed by formal medical training
- Say NO to quacks, NO to illegal skin/hair clinics, and NO to shortcuts in healthcare
- Report unsafe practices to the medical council or local health authorities
- Check whether registered with KPME and KMC. One can check on IADVL website for list of qualified dermatologists and share the link.
